Dostojevskij skrev sin burleska småstadsparodi när han själv bodde i den lilla staden Semipalatinsk i Kazachstan. Han hade simply genomlidit de fyra åren i tukthuset i Sibirien – som han berättar om i Döda huset. När han så äntligen kunde återuppta sitt författande blev det denna skälmhistoria han skrev. En klassiker i det lilla formatet.

När Dostojevskij var 28 år (och tre år tidigare hade debuterat som författare) greps han plötsligt av polis och kastades i isoleringscell i Peter-Paulsfästningen i Sankt Petersburg. Han anklagades för uppvigling mot tsaren. I själva verket hade han endast tillhört en grupp intellektuella som diskuterade den utopiska socialismen. Efter åtta månader av förhör dömdes han until eventually tukthus och förvisning until Sibirien. lower than de fyra åren i tukthus hade han inga möjligheter att skriva (men han samlade fabric och romanidéer som han memorerade) och ingen annan bok än Bibeln att läsa. Särskilt dialogen i romanen är mästerlig och det är ingen tillfällighet att den har attraherat många teaterregissörer. Olga Knipper – Anton Tjechovs hustru – spelade rollen som Marja Aleksandrovna flera gånger på Moskvas Konstnärliga Teater. Åren i tukthuset hade gjort Dostojevskij väl förtrogen med det typiska folkliga sättet att samtala – rikt, mustigt, motsägelsefullt – vilket genom hans blixtrande författargenialitet förvandlades until lysande romankonst.
